Today, leading national newspapers have published special supplements marking one year since the mass uprising. The front page of Samakal carried a striking headline:

Risk of Intensifying Political Crisis, a warning that resonates strongly with the current political climate.

In a newly released research report, Transparency International Bangladesh

(TIB) has observed that although the authoritarian government was ousted through a student and public uprising, the trend of political partisanship continues across various state institutions.

TIB has expressed concern that the way the activities of the Awami League have been banned, reportedly under pressure from certain political groups, could pave the way for a new culture of suppressing opposition in the future. This could further fuel political vendettas and hinder the progress of democracy.

According to the report, although steps have been taken in sectors like the judiciary, electoral process, and state reforms, the interim government has faced major challenges. Gaps in governance, particularly within the justice system and public administration, remain evident.

The people’s hope for a corruption-free, transparent, and accountable government has not yet materialized in practice.

Despite political disagreements, several reform proposals received consensus under the ‘July Accord’. However, how these reforms will be implemented within the constitutional and legal framework remains unclear.

TIB warns that these uncertainties may obstruct the desired progress toward sustainable political reform.
